Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization — a brotherhood of men committed to becoming better versions of themselves through moral teaching, self-improvement, and service to others. It is not a religion, a business, or a social club in the ordinary sense, though it holds elements in common with all three.
Masons meet on the level, act by the plumb, and part on the square — symbols drawn from the tools of stonemasons, used to teach lessons of equality, honesty, and fair dealing. Membership is open to men of good character who believe in a Supreme Being, regardless of their particular faith, race, or background.
Mystic Tie Lodge was chartered in 1869, and has met continuously in Indianapolis ever since — today at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. We are a working lodge under the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Indiana, holding Stated Meetings, conferring degrees, and carrying forward more than a century and a half of the same obligations our founders took on.
“That sacred and inviolable bond which unites men of the most discordant opinions into one band of brothers…” — the phrase that opens our homepage — is not a slogan. It is the mystic tie itself: the thing this lodge was named for, and the thing it still exists to practice.
The first degree. An introduction to the Craft, its symbols, and its obligations.
The second degree. A deepening of study, symbolism, and personal development.
The third degree. Full membership in the Craft, with its complete rights and responsibilities.
